Cabo Dolphins Opens in the Marina

Cabo San Lucas is about to get its first dolphin center, right on the Marina. This ambitious project started in March 2005 and will be open for dolphin swims on Monday, February 27.

This is an adventure for the whole family, ages five and up. Children under 10 must be accompanied by a participating adult. During the sixty minute program, the guests will learn about this fascinating marine mammal, and even listen to their underwater songs. The second half is interaction in a small group with the dolphins! Participants cannot bring cameras with them, however Cabo Dolphin’s professional videographers and photographers will capture the entire experience on film, so you can relive this magical moments for years to come.

Although the pool is ten feet deep, you do not need to know how to swim in order to interact with the dolphins. Life jackets are provided and are mandatory.

Exclusive access is given to family and friends of program participants overlooking the swim area. The general public is invited to view the dolphins from the underwater viewing area.

The swim with dolphin programs run Monday-Friday at 10:00am, 12:00pm, 3:00pm, 5:00pm and Saturday and Sunday at 10:00am and 12:00pm only.

Getting dusty in the desert

A couple of weeks ago I found myself with some time on my hands in Cabo San Lucas, not really a surprise since I was on vacation. While sitting poolside I thumbed through a tourist guide and found a two hour ATV tour with Desert Park ATV and was able to make a reservation for that afternoon. Perfect.

The tour was set to depart at 2:00pm and I was told to arrive 15 minutes early. I checked in and was issued a helmet (mandatory), goggles, and a bandanna (were we going to rob banks?) After everything was in place, I was asked the million dollar question, “Have you driven an ATV before?” My reply was less than confidence instilling “Sure, once, years ago. And I drive very, very slow.” I was put to do practice rounds for ten minutes before we set off, after a brief explanation of how the gears worked.

Finally it was time for the real deal! We were off to explore the 25 miles of trails in the private Cabo Real nature preserve. For me, what made this tour great is that you never drive on the street. You go from the base camp onto the desert trail. It was a small group of five riders, with a lead guide and one in the back. I never felt pressured to go faster despite always bringing up the rear.

During the two hour journey I was mesmerized by the varieties of cacti and flowers present in the Baja desert. Even more startling was stop at Los Tules beach, where the golden desert meets the azure Sea of Cortez. It was the perfect place to rest, take some pictures and have a drink of water.

After the stop at the beach it was off to the oasis! Could this be, a city girl was actually in the middle of the desert and going to an oasis? Holds on, what is an oasis? Well, a quick explanation by the guide told us that an oasis is an isolated area of vegetation in the desert that has a year round water source. The spring that fed this oasis was not large, more of a trickle, but I was assured that there is a lot more water at other times of the year.

On the trip back to base camp it was a challenge to keep my eyes on the trail, the vista was spectacular. The contrast of the cloudless blue sky, with the golden desert, and the ancient green cacti, words cannot describe it.

When we got back to base camp the guide blew the dust off me with a Shop Vac. Talk about service! I would definitely go back!

If you go: wear pants, long sleeve t-shirt if you go in the early morning, sunscreen, and close toed shoes.

Hop on Hop off

<img alt="hopon_bus.jpg" src="http://images.caboonline.com.mx/mt/hopon_bus.jpg" width="200" height="135" align="right"style="padding: 0 10px 0 10px;"/>So here I am in Los Cabos, and area that encompasses some 40 miles. But where to begin to explore? Cabo San Lucas, San Jose del Cabo, what is where? I needed a city tour. Hop on Hop off to the rescue. It was like a guide book come to life.

The tour starts around 9:00am, with pick up at your hotel or at a nearby meeting point. And as promised, the white Hop on Hop off bus appeared at the Puerto Paraiso a few minutes before 9:00am. No "Mexican time" here. Once all of the passengers are aboard the motor coach, the guide begins with a history of the area, staring with the tectonic plates colliding and creating the Baja peninsula.

Our guide was Rico, a native of Puerto Rico who has lived in Cabo San Lucas for seventeen years. He was full of knowledge on the destination, and ever so patient with the youngster in our group who was a font of questions. From flora, to fauna, to lifestyles of the rich and famous, Rico seemed to know it all.

In San Jose del Cabo do not miss the church (and the grisly story of the Friars) and town square. After that, check out the various art galleries in the area. To cool off try a delicious paleta from La Michocana.

There is a wealth of shopping options, from typical tourist stuff, to home decor, art, and beach wear. If given the full three hours, a meal will definitely be in order. There is a comfortable little outdoor cafe just next to the church where you can get a cold drink (Corona) and a light meal. The Tropicana Inn Restaurant Bar and Grill (Blvd. Mijares 30) is a quaint place that serves a delicious turkey sandwich, complete with cranberry sauce.

After our time was up we hopped on and were entertained with more information about the destination until we arrived at the blown glass factory in Cabo San Lucas. If you are lucky, like I was, you might get a chance to blow your own glass. (Don't get upset when they break it. It's just to give you the experience.)

Then we hop back on for a quick paseo through downtown Cabo San Lucas, past the marina, and back to Puerto Paraiso where my day began. After just a short time in the destination, I had the feeling that I knew my way around, and had found things I wanted to go back and see.

Go Ahead and Touch!

Traveling children's museum comes to Los Cabos

The Papalote (“kite” in English) Children’s Museum will come to Cabo San Lucas from February 3-April 30, 2006. This is a traveling version of the Papalote Mueseo del Niño in Mexico City. Here is a place that children of all ages, as well adults that are still “kids at heart,” can freely explore, touch and experience a variety of exhibits designed to teach, but are equally amusing and fun.

A giant puzzle of Mexico helps the youngsters learn the States in Mexico; others learn how to create a “God's eye” (yarn weaving by Huichol Indians) and other indigenous crafts. For future doctors and nurses, there is a whole medical area, including a pig heart to inspect.

The Papalote Children’s Museum comes with a planetarium where views learn the secrets of the universe, as they lay back to view the “night sky”.

There are areas with computers, puzzles, educational toys, plus an area for younger children, where they can satisfy their natural curiosity without danger. The bubble room is another favorite where kids are enchanted by their bubble creations and all the soapy fun they can have.

With 92 divided interactive exhibitions in four subjects the museum gives children of all ages three hours of fun for a very small price.
